Why donate to ShawChicago?
As he was leaving our production of Shaw’s Candida, a Canadian audience member noted: ShawChicago is “the premiere concert reading company in North America.” Merely 40% of ShawChicago’s operating budget comes from ticket sales, the majority of our funding comes from the generosity of audience members. We receive support from corporations and foundations, and limited funds from government agencies also. As the resident theater company at The Ruth Page Center for the Arts, The Ruth Page Foundation also provides significant in-kind support. .
ShawChicago is notable for several key reasons:
- We are the oldest Shaw-focused company in the United States
- We are one of only three Shaw-focused companies in North America
- We are one of the few theater companies focused on presenting the works of Shaw in the world
- We emphasize the richness of the language in literature by presenting concert readings of the great plays of Shaw and other brilliant playwrights
The mission of ShawChicago is to present the works of Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950) and his contemporaries: powerful plays that present timeless social issues; plays that explore human relationships. Masterpieces of wit and wisdom are selected for presentation in our signature concert reading style. This presentation style allows our director and actors to focus on the rich language of the playwright without the distractions of sets and costumes. Using only their voices, gestures, facial expression and minimal movement, the actors create a world in which the audience conjures up the setting in their own minds. The concert reading technique has evolved from perhaps the oldest theatrical form, emotionally animated storytelling.
ShawChicago operates under a contract with Actors’ Equity, the organization representing American actors and stage managers. This contract allows ShawChicago to hire the finest actors in Chicagoland, actors with the ability to bring their roles to life using primarily their voice.
ShawChicago is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Donor acknowledgements are provided for all donations over $100.
